Fuzzy World

A survival video game and a lightweight tabletop RPG sharing one world — Fuzzies defending their village from crashed aliens. Grown from drawings I made as a kid, 3D modelled in Blender, and then designed into a video game in Unreal Engine.

The world

One crashed ship. One small, brave village.

The Fuzzies were minding their own business until something fell out of the sky. Now aliens spill from a wreck in the north, and the only thing standing in their way to build a new home is a handful of fuzzy creatures who refuse to run.

Underneath the cute creatures is an older, darker myth — a lid that should have stayed shut, a stolen spark, the price of reaching too far. The infestation reads it back to you on the ground itself: blue, carnivorous plants creeping outward from the crash site, swallowing the map one tile at a time.

Three ways to play

One world, three tables.

The same story, told in whatever medium you've got in front of you — a game controller, a fistful of dice, or a classroom of kids who've never rolled initiative before.

The Story

One thing that making the TTRPG (tabletop role playing game) and classroom version of the game reminded me was that the video game needed a storyline. Who were the players going to be in the game? What was the goal? What was going to make the game fun?

I went back to the storyboards from my childhood and looked at the different characters on the page. Each one had its own background and motivations. They shared the common goal of keeping Fuzzy Land safe, but not one of them were the same as the others.

I settled on four classes you can play: The Wanderer, Barbarian, Rogue and Wizard. But what did that mean? I worked out what each could do with the TTRPG version using physical dice instead of computer logic. It took me a bit to understand that the TTRPG version couldn't translate exactly into the video game but the feel of what it was like to be in Fuzzy World could.

A Companion for every Player

The Chompers I imagined at ten, the dog-like creatures that protected the Fuzzies, still needed some sort of logic to follow the Fuzzies around and to rush to protect them if they saw a Freak Out. After watching a few tutorials, I created the blueprints needed so that the Chompers would percieve the Freak Outs and rush to attack. They also follow the player around. I'm still working on a treat system to keep them interested (may be an attribute bar) but since most of this is done I'm marking it as complete.

A UI so the player knows their stats and how to control the game

Created a map with Inkarnate and plugged it into Unreal Engine 5.8. Took a lot of tweaking but I managed to get the icon to follow the player around.

The Freak Outs are learning to think

I'm giving the Freak Outs (the aliens) a mind of their own, so they wander, notice you, give chase, and grow bolder the longer a fight drags on. The danger is real now, instead of just mindless wandering on a landscape where nothing happens.

A whole adventure before the bell

A version a teacher can run in a single class — do-over tokens for when luck turns cruel, a final showdown the teacher plays, and a workshop I'm offering to schools.

May 2026 · the dice version

The same world, around a table

For years I've been going to Kamloops every May to run Gameify Your Writing workshops and always returning home inspired. 2026 was no different. I made my gameify workshop into an easy to run app (for me to run it and not for the students to play it) and I started thinking--what if the story I was makingin the video game could be played as a simple tabletop role playing game like Dungeons and Dragons?

That's what else I'm building. A version of Fuzzy World you can play with friends, no computer required, just pencils, dice and imagination. Simple rules, short campaigns, no hours of prep for the weary Game Master. Unlimited adventures powered by your imagination.

The Fuzzies learned to hold things

I put my characters back into a sandbox and decided to start the world fresh. I took the Fuzzy character and all the logic (walk, run, jump, swim, fight) and created things to hold.

A shield for its back, a sword for one hand and a club for the other.

I learned how to make data tables, enums and blueprints for items. The result? Now they can pick things up, carry them, and use what they find.

Grinfinn Says Goodbye

I took a pause at this time because my own real-life Chomper and loyal friend passed away at the age of 16. He had a stroke and series of heart attacks one night and I had to tell him I loved him by saying goodbye.

Grinfinn had been with me from 2017 and saw me through many tough times. Most of what I had programmed up to this point was done with him by my side.

The world became a place

My Fuzzies could walk, run, jump, and fight. I wanted them to swim. Sure, it was cool that they could walk underwater but it wasn't very realistic.

I found a tutorial on how to add swim components and have your pawn (the character) recognize that it was in water. And I set to work trying different techniques until I found one that worked.

The world became a place

Having grown up playing Dungeons and Dragons, and running one of the largest D&D library programs in the country for 4 years, I love maps. I watched a tutorial on world building with UE 5.7 and learned how to make my own world.

Fuzzy World, a bunch of drawings that lived in my scrapbooks, turned into somewhere these creatures can actually walk around. A first patch of village with ground under their feet and a sky overhead.

More Modelling from the Childhood Drawings

My childhood drawings were all storyboards that told the tales of these critters who resided in Fuzzy Land. The Chompers, the Freak Outs, the Lava Monster, the Fuzzy Gators. All these things needed to come alive.

I 3D modelled each one learning more and more along the way. I practised making armatures and rigs and learned how to export from Blender and into UE5 with FBX files. Each time I did so a part of that story I made as a child became real.

I Opened Unreal Engine 5 for the First Time

The UI looked daunting and the controls were strange. It felt like part 3D modelling software and part video game controller. I wated how-to videos on LinkedIn Learning and YouTube and I started from scratch. I learned about basic blueprints and game logic by reverse engineering Unreal Engine's templates.

At first it was just to pass the time but after awhile the ten-year old in me awakened. Those fuzzy little creatures I obsessed over as a kid came alive in my imagination. I shared them over my Instagram and comments came in telling me they were cute and the hair was so much fun.

I started to wonder if I could turn these little creatures into a video game once I got better at modelling them.

The first Fuzzy left the page

I taught myself to sculpt on a computer using Blender so these little fuzzy creatures could become something real — a model I could turn around and look at from every side, straight off my childhood drawings.

Long ago · where it began

It started in a 10-year-old's sketchbook

A ten-year-old's drawing: fuzzy creatures, a crashed spaceship, a little village worth protecting. Most impotantly, a mom who loved these creations so much that she held onto them until her son was well into adulthood. Now these illustrations are the inspirations for a video game, a TTRPG, and classroom game that teaches creativity and cooperation
